See my review at Sinfully.3.5 Stars!Happy Birthday is a stand-alone short novella by B.D. Roca. A quick and intense read about a biker with a death wish and the man he is trying to save. After witnessing a murder, Jake Rushman is on the run and trying to evade his imminent death at the hands of the Bastard Legion MC. Nick is the club enforcer who has been charged with eliminating the “problem”. In other words, Nick is supposed to get rid of the witness that can land the biker club in a whole lot of hot water. However, Nick is done with the biker way of life that he had no choice but fall into at a very young age. Nick plans to walk a difficult path to redemption, one where saving Jake will be the last thing he ever does. When Jake and Nick come face to face, neither one expects a profound connection to develop. Neither one expects to fall in love. This is a very quick read and there is a lot going on. While I did like the style of writing and the overall story arc, I did have some issues with its execution. I do realize that this is a novella and things between our two protagonists are supposed to move at a faster pace due to the length of the story. However, I wish the author would have developed the characters a little more, particularly Nick’s character. Nick goes from this individual who is simply done with life to someone who has hope, possibly for the first time in his life. I would have liked to see the author dive a little deeper. She certainly has talent as a writer and I feel like I would have connected with both Jake and Nick a little more had I been given more story. We do get a very decent story with a few sizzling hot stolen moments amidst all the chaos. And, I must say, those scenes were not only passion-filled and sexy but they were also a lot of fun to read. All in all, Happy Birthday was an enjoyable read by B.D. Roca. This is not an overly long novella so if you are looking for something with little angst, is fun and a fairly easy read, this would be worth picking up.***An advance reading copy of Happy Birthday by B.D. A Hearts On Fire ReviewFOUR HEARTS--Consider me impressed by B.D. Roca's debut, "Happy Birthday": where a suicidal killer meets his love match unexpectedly…in his latest target. For his twenty-third birthday, Aussie MC enforcer and killer Nick should be celebrating his life, celebrating the start of adulthood. Instead, he’s performed numerous killings for a criminal MC he wants to leave, fought and scrabbled too many times with nothing but scars on his knuckles and soul. And he doesn’t care about ending it all. “You still want that little secret to stay secret?”“You wouldn’t.”“You’re right, I wouldn’t. Not unless I heard you talked. In which case, all bets would be off.”“You’re a fucking bastard, Nick. I thought you were better than—”“I’m a paid killer, Mike. What the fuck were you expecting?”He hides who he is, a gay man, in fear of retaliation or worse by the very MC he kills for. He has no one to trust, no one at all. Enter Nick’s target of his last “cleanup” job, Jake Rushman. Jake was just at the wrong place at the wrong time, a witness to a botched MC murder and unwanted loose end. He left his home and was on the run for a few days before Nick catches up. This first time author took a few of my favorite themes and made it interesting, suspenseful, not depressing and hot with enough backstory to keep the pace going. We have a killer, who is not really a good guy underneath but sadly had some shitty circumstances thrown his way. And he rolled with the punches. But the best part about Nick is that he needed something, or should I say a chance with someone, to prove to himself that he could be that guy. A man with purpose. Reading Jake’s angle was pretty intriguing. Imagine being a regular Joe Schmoe IT guy, with a good life and background and it all changes at the blink of an eye. The way he and Nick come together might read fast for some, but when you have a barrel at your dome, priorities change, views change. “I’ve got plans for you, Nick No-Last-Name. I’ve got plans and tricks, and I’m going to fuck you so hard you won’t be able to say no when I tell you what we’re gonna do. You understand?” “You’re crazy.”“No. You’re the crazy one, but I like that. I like it a lot. And I’m going to have more of it.”Sometimes, I question couples who get together under duress, but not these two. Even though the length is short and some passages weren’t transitionally smooth. This is something the author can work on for the future. There were some passages that verbally slam dunks:“Savage, the thing that started it. His death wish and Jake’s desperation to just keep living. The trade Nick had been willing to make. That trade, never made, that had brought them both here.”But then there were passages that would end at a strong point and instead of having some lasting filler to smooth it out, the story would jump ahead a couple of paces. The suspense was good but…I wouldn’t have minded Italy to go a little differently. A certain someone was slipping and they weren’t previously. Even with my quibbles, the story is strong. The couple made an impression and if this was longer, I would have thrown 5 hearts at its feet. I don’t think it needed to be a full length novel because the story gives you more than just the basics to get by. As is, I’m in heavy like, super crushing on both main characters. I like my killers to believable. I think Nick definitely was. And Jake was the perfect match for him. He really does have a pair of “steel balls”.The epilogue made me soft and pink. I gushed a little. Fitting. I’ll be rereading this, which says something.Recommended for readers who want something short to read but want some depth as well, don’t mind romance on the run and a bad guy who gets a second chance at making something of his self in his own way.I am definitely checking out future work from this author. Loved the tone, feel, word slinging and characters!

Bikers, a hitman with a death wish & the witness he just can’t walk away from.Jake Rushman witnessed a deal gone wrong and is now on the run from one of the most vicious and notorious motorcycle gangs in Australia. Nick is the enforcer sent to get rid of Jake. Instead though, Nick is determined to give Jake a change Nick never got...and help him get out. He doesn't expect to fall for Jake, or for Jake to fall right back. He sure doesn't expect the offer to run with Jake. This was fast, a little dirty, and a whole lot of fun! I liked the characters, the set-up and the payoff in the end with a bright, shiny HEA.Recommended!Advanced Review Copy generously provided by Dreamspinner Press in exchange for an honest review. This review has been cross-posted at Gay Book Reviews.

4.5 starsThis was super good! I admit I'm totally surprised. I had never heard of this author before and honestly all my attempts at reading biker books previously have gone horribly awry. But.....I'm no quitter so I decided to give this a try. It was nothing like I thought it would be. No cheesy insta-love. No bad dialogue. The story follows MC club enforcer Nick as he follows a guy he's supposed to kill. Jake saw something he shouldn't have and is on the run. I don't want to say more about the plot cuz I don't want to spoil anyone but this is creative and well done. Despite it's short length there is a lot of story here and there is great character development. I loved both of these guys and I was rooting for them all the way. The plot was fast paced and interesting, there were some really emotionally touching scenes and the sex scenes were hot but they did not overshadow the story or make this an erotica piece. There is nothing else by this author on GR (I immediately ran to check that out). If this is her first attempt at writing I'm even more impressed. Can't wait to see what she does next.

Phenomenal. One of the best romantic novellas I've read. The stakes are high (and dark) but beautifully reckoned with. The prose is absolutely sterling. The sex scenes are as scorching as they are emotional. Just loved it. B.D. Roca is now on my must-read list.

A motorcycle enforcer with a conscience is not your usual fare, but it makes for an intriguing “hook” that pulled me right into this story. Combine it with an innocent man running for his life, and you’ve got ingredients that can make a story sizzle with tension. Between Nick’s need for redemption and Jake’s determination to survive, the author had me on the edge of my seat from the start. The suspense alone almost got to me to the point of breathlessness, but the many twists and turns and the ingenious ending had me spellbound. In a novella that feels much longer than its sixty-two pages, ‘Happy Birthday” sketches the pivotal moments in two men’s lives in such a masterful way that I am almost afraid to read the sequel – a novel titled ‘Broken Sun’ that will be published in a week or so. But how can I resist finding out more about Nick and Jake? Please find my full review on Rainbow Book Reviews.

Redemption & sacrifice are the prevailing themes of this novelette that captures an epic romance between a killer & a intellectual that keeps you on the edge of your seat. This story somehow still manages to soar despite being edited down to the bone.I would happily read a longer novel by this author.

Absolutely loving this world the author has created. I already read book two and it’s amazing how Nick’s uncle is redeemed after the evil person he is here. It’s got a mood and atmosphere that I really like; gritty and kind of dark and a wonderfully romantic ending. Can’t wait to read more from this author.

At the young age of nine, in order to survive, Nick had to play along with his uncle and join a fierce motorcycle gang. He grew up to be the enforcer for his uncle. Three days before his twenty-third birthday, he finds himself tracking down a witness to a murder—and finds himself obsessed with Jake Rushmore.Jake Rushmore is on the run after witnessing the murder. He knows he’s being followed, and is resigned to facing the outcome once caught. But as scared as he is, he makes a move on Nick that changes both their lives. The last stop for Nick is Sydney, where he plans to put the cat-and-mouse chase to an end. But then Jake makes a surprising move, one that Nick can’t resist.Just when Nick thinks his life has changed for the better, evil rears its ugly head. But Jake is smart, he’s always one step ahead and holds all the cards, and he’s going to do more than control a dangerous situation.Happy Birthday is a first time read for me from B.D. Roca. For a short novella, this was definitely suspenseful, fast paced and powerful. I liked the connection between Jake and Nick. Even though the story is short, I think there was just enough development with Jake and Nick to make them click. For me, Jake stole the show with his smart thinking and courage.Reviewed by Maryann for The Novel Approach Reviews

Liked it - but Nick, the biker / enforcer MC, is supposedly 23, although his character reads like he's mid-thirties, early-forties. Interesting plot - loved the character of Jake.

This 2 book series starts off with this short story, which actually takes place after the next book which is novel length - but it makes sense once you start reading. So yes, read this one first, then Broken Sun.Spoiler: I wish I had realized that the Uncle in this book is the MC in the next book, it actually would have made more sense when I started the 2nd book, even though he's pretty despicable, you learn why and, of course, he redeems! I spent too much time confused/guessing if it was and not focusing on the story. Easy enough to put together since he mentions his nephews name, Nick, right away.

I bought this because I wanted to dip my toes in before going after the second book (although the titles are weirdly numbered, 0.5 and 2...not sure where book #1 is), Broken Sun.I liked the MC's. I liked both Jake and Nick and I love a good redemption story but somehow, they just weren't enough. It might be because it was a shorter novella and a lot of their time was implied and skipped over. I did love the ending. While I liked the book, I'm still on the fence about committing to the longer second book. I'll probably wait for some more reviews.

4.5 Normally biker books are not exactly my go to books. This one has me out of breath. A rollercoaster of feeling. It was dark but you like the characters too much to care. Nick is not a nice guy but I was not sure I wanted him to be anything other than himself. Him being forced into it take the sting out of it and you end up wanting him to get a better like.

Review by The Blogger Girls. Nick is the enforcer of a biker gang run, in part, by his uncle who raised him. No longer able to follow through with all that his job entails, he decides he is going to end his life instead of taking out one more. Nick has quite a colorful background and is a classic victim of his circumstances, doing what it takes to survive, from witnessing his parent’s death, to growing up in the gang and having to be their enforcer under this uncle’s thumb.Jake is Nick’s cleanup job, a man who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He witnessed a killing and is now on the run. He knows it is only a matter of time before he is taken out, but when the time comes and Nick makes contact, he is not on board with Nick’s plan, but instead, offers another solution. These two have some immediate chemistry. Nick decides he will enjoy Jake, his one last chance at sex before he ends things. But, when he tries to get Jake to go off on his own, Jake won’t budge. Jake turns out to be much stronger than I had anticipated. I loved that he wasn’t a meek victim here, but one who took the reins and became an active participant in their lives. He weighed all of his options and offered the best scenario for all involved. Luckily, Nick was open to his ideas and of having a second chance at life. This was a quick story, but there is plenty enough detail to get a vivid idea of their backgrounds and current situation. There are a few more bumps in the road, some of which Nick had planned for, and some that Jake came through with flying colors. I was rooting for them from the get go and was happy to see their relationship group.B.D. Roca took a somewhat predicable story and made it unique and interesting. I really enjoyed it and wished it was longer. This was a great debut story, I’m definitely looking forward to more in the future.

*** Copy provided to Bayou Book Junkie in exchange for a fair and honest review. ***Nick is a Motorcycle Club enforcer sent by his uncle, the MC’s Vice-President, to eliminate the latest threat to their club, Jake Rushman, an innocent witness to a drug-related murder. Nick is not too keen on killing Jake, though, so he decides to trade his life for Jake’s. Jake is on the run, knowing he’s being followed by someone who’s trying to silence him. Once he meets Nick, he figures out what the other man intends to do, sacrifice himself for Jake, and Jake refuses to allow this, offering him another solution and hope of a better life, one that they can probably share. However, Nick’s uncle is not too happy about this turn of events and wants his best enforcer back, leaving Nick thinking he only has one way out even if it’s the last thing he wants to do, killing again. This was a different take into the MC world. For one, Nick is not all too happy with being part of the Motorcycle Club, having been roped into it after his junkie parents died, leaving him under his uncle’s not-so-tender care. He also has a conscience and can’t in good faith kill someone who is obviously innocent like Jake is. And Jake is not a shy wallflower, he is resourceful, intelligent and strong and is just what Nick’s needs in that point of his life when he has just about given up. The two together are great, they have good rapport and chemistry and work together quite well against their common threat. The book was very good, kept my interest from beginning to end and I absolutely loved how it all played out for Nick and Jake in the end. All in all, a very enjoyable read!Rating: 4.5 Stars!!!

4 Heart Review by AmberI didn’t expect this to be as sweet as it was. And it really was friggin sweet. This is my first BD Roca story and it won’t be my last. What I really liked is that the author was able to develop the characters and the story well enough that I didn’t feel unsatisfied when it ended. With that said I would’ve liked to know more about Jake but the lack of background wasn’t a story killer for me. I think the way this was told made perfect sense and flowed really well.Nick hasn’t known much love in his life. Having been forced into his Uncle’s violent Motorcycle Club at a young age all Nick knows is death and violence. Deciding he’s had enough of taking his Uncle’s orders, he chooses to end his life and in turn save the last man he was sent to kill.Jake witnessed a horrible murder. Believing the murderers would come after him, Jake goes on the run.As the tables turn these two end up sharing a powerful physical connection and things start to change for both men.Like I mentioned I wasn’t prepared for the connection these two had. It was very sweet and very real. I loved knowing that Nick, having never had love was able to find that with Jake.I knew their happily ever after couldn’t last and I loved how they both were able to take back control of their lives.Overall, this is a thoroughly enjoyable little novella that I recommend!! So sweet and so good.

Nick is a suicidal hit man working for his uncle’s motorcycle club. He is sent after a witness to a drug deal gone bad, but instead of doing his job, he finds the man that he wants to spend the rest of his life with. Jake was in the wrong place at the wrong time when the drug deal went down, but that luck changed when he saw spotted Nick in the same bar and instantly knew he was sent to kill Jake. Instead of running, Jake asks Nick to go back to his hotel room and what transpires is a heated, passionate, night of raunchy sex that quickly turns to so much more.I admit, I wasn’t sure how the author could redeem a 23 year old, serial killer, hitman, who wants to die after his last job that happens to be on his birthday. But, not only did she redeem Nick, but she made him into a man willing to be overpowered by his lover (Jake). But, it wasn’t just a quick tryst for the heck of it. The sensuality between the two men was instantaneous and lead the way for Jake to suggest Nick go on the run with him instead of ending his life. For a short story, Happy Birthday packed a punch. I instantly wanted these two men to get their happily ever after and spend their lives together. The ending surprised me, in a good way, but also showed how strong and protective Jake was over Nick. I was prepared for Nick to be the take charge, alpha, strong male, but putting Jake in that role allowed Nick to be cared for and cherished in a way that he never had. I really enjoyed this story and the author’s attention to detail and am glad I read it.*Copy provided for review.

Nick is not a good guy: as enforcer of a MC deep in dirty business, he's done many things he's not proud of. But he's decided to redeem himself by saving his last intended target, Jake, and innocent man who happened to be at the wrong place and time. After saving him, Nick will make his big exit and end with his life. But when he meets Jake and finds an unexpected connection, he realises it is not easy to give up hope, and wishes for a happy life with his new lover. Although his dark past will always be just one step behind them…So, tall, dark, sexy and dangerous meets golden boy and falls for him, and they manage a happy end despite the bad guys trying to prevent it. Nick is a very dark character, who's done what he needed to survive, but he's got a soul and is tired of being an ugly bastard. He plans a selfless act of redemption, saving his last target, Jake, an innocent witness doomed to die because of his inopportuneness. But Jake is not what Nick expected, he's got a backbone, he wants to live and he likes Nick… a lot. Which is mutual. So these two devise a simple plan to escape the MC, and manage some time of happiness before the bad guys come looking for payback. It is a bit disappointing how easy it was to scare the bad bad villain away. So simple. So anyway, although the plot is a bit lacking and the end feels somehow rushed, the sex scenes are hot. Really hot. They make this short story worth reading.

Jake is a nice guy, accountant, in the wrong place at the wrong time. He inadvertently witnesses a murder of a drug dealer by a motorcycle gang and he knows his life is on borrowed time unless he can escape.Nik is the nephew of the leader of the Motorcycle gang and he’s set to take Jake out of the picture, but Nik’s tired of this life of killing and wants to do one final “good” act before taking his own life (what he perceives is the only way to successfully leave the gang.)Nik decides to give Jake the tools to make his escape successful but Jake turns the tables on Nik and offers him a deal he can’t refuse.**This is a short story so I don’t want to give too much away – but – WOW it really packs a punch. I was captivated by word one and loved every single minute of the ride.I am not familiar with this author, but I am very impressed. The writing is dark and powerful, the story flows well given it’s length and the story is both fairy-tale and realistic at the same time.Jake and Nik are a wonderful couple and their chemistry is HOT but the most tangible thing between them is their love.I highly recommend this book and will eagerly look for more from this author.6 of 5 stars

Happy Birthday by author B.D. Roca is a twist on cat and mouse game. I liked Nick he is so honest about who he is and what he does. He is an enforcer for a motorcycle gang. He knows he is the one who cleans up the messes and takes people out. He has no illusions that he is a bad man. He is street wise. He has a ton of anger inside him. He is tired of doing his job though, he promises catching Jake is the last job he is going to do. Maybe the last thing he does in this lifetime.Jake is a witness to a gang murder. He is smart though. He runs, but he knows he cannot run forever. They will eventually catch him. But he wants it to be on his terms. I liked his guts. He really is daring and brave. When these two fall in love it is a case of opposites attract for sure. Jake is an IT guy not a street wise biker. But somehow it works. That is if the gang doesn't kill them both for being together.I really loved this story, lots of intensity and heat that kept me reading and wanting to know what would happen next. If tough bikers are what you like this one is a must read. Five Shooting Stars

A Joyfully Jay review. 2.5 starsThis book started out with an interesting premise on the basic level. We have Nick, disillusioned with all of the violence in this life and looking for a permanent way out. He sees his chance in Jake where he can not only spare Jake, but end his own torment. In the moment, it’s a good story of a bad boy finding love and redemption, but the supporting details both before the men meet and then after are weak and the story then lacks structure. The men meet under unusual circumstances and they both take a chance on what they think will be their last night. Jake immediately sees that there is a good person underneath Nick’s hit man exterior. I could go with that one as the men did complement each other. It was the rest that didn’t come together for me.Read Michelle's review in its entirety here.

4.5 A beautifully written and dark novella about redemption, love, sacrifice and true love an life when it's least expected. Plus, the sex scenes were as sweet and beautiful and they were really damn hot.
