you-never-know

Over the past eight years, twenty-six year old Sam Harper has come to realize a few things: her son is the light of her life, a pint of Cherry Garcia will cure all that ails you, her mother is a biscuit-and-grave-filled genius and nothing, absolutely nothing, ever goes as planned. Still stuck in her tiny hometown of Delia, Georgia, Sam has sat idly by and watched as her life went from “prom-queen and head cheerleader” to “single mom with meaningless desk job”. So when Hollywood bad-boy, Ethan Grant, shows up to film his new television show – the very same actor whose posters wall-papered Sam’s teenage bedroom – Sam welcomes back her excited inner-fangirl with open arms. And when a chance encounter with Ethan confirms what Sam always knew – that behind Ethan’s green eyes and smoldering good looks is a perfect gentleman with the kindest of hearts – Sam finds herself in a romance worthy of "Cinderella" status. But soon enough, reality seeps back in as the relentless gossip columns and Ethan’s busy schedule lead Sam back to a life she’s come to know well – one full of nothing but broken promises and disappointment. Sam begins questioning whether Ethan has what it takes to help lead her back to the confident and vivacious woman she used to be, or if Sam will have to do the unthinkable and actually figure life out on her own....

This isn’t your typical review from me – I’m still a little thrown off by what was possibly the biggest twist I’ve ever experienced in a book before. It took me completely off guard and trust me, I’ve read some pretty mind-blowing books! So, I’m going to start a little backwards here so bear with me. I just finished this a little bit ago and as it settles in with me, I have to admit that I loved the epilogue. It left me happy and giddy and it wrapped things up nicely – but don’t worry, I won’t spoil anything but I will say that there is NOT cliffhanger so….make of that what you will. That being said, at about 90-something percent I was ready to throw my iPad more than I’ve EVER wanted to with a book before and there have been some pretty close calls. I immediately went on a rampage through text, Facebook and twitter – did THAT really just happen? And since I’m still being honest, I’m not so sure I was all that crazy about it either. I was invested in this book and in their story and then…. Well you’ll have to read to find out what happens!Let me give you the brief rundown: Sam has had an infatuation with actor Ethan Grant since she had posters of him hanging on her bedroom walls as a teen. She stalks the set of the TV series he’s filming in her hometown on a regular basis but one day she harshly realizes that it’s such a silly dream; she’ll never get to meet him. Then one day at a fundraising event the impossible happens and Sam and Ethan meet. But it’s not all hearts and flowers. No. She doesn’t see him again for weeks later when, what seems like a dream come true, he finally notices her on set and wants to have dinner with her. Then, well…. Like I said – you’ll have to read the rest to find out all about their story.YOU NEVER KNOW is a sweet story of just pure love mixed in with the occasional bumps in the road that come with the obvious results of dating a TV star. I liked the addition of Sam having a son although I felt like her mom watched him an awful lot – she was always out with her friends. All of the characters were great and added different personality to the story. There were a few inconsistencies but nothing that took away from the overall feel of the story. I’m quite impressed with the editing – I noticed in the back that the author admitted to not having professional editing done and other than one or two things, I didn’t notice anything else. There’s nothing worse than when bad editing causes you to lose focus on a story. I felt like some of the story was a little cheesy but this may be because Ethan was a little cheesy – Sam called him out on it multiple times. Or it could be what the author was going for since it made a little more sense after the GIANT TWIST. I think to myself all the time when I read, “could this really happen in real life?” but I have to remind myself that it’s a book and authors can write whatever they want to which, I have to admit, is what I LOVE about reading. I did want more development of Ethan and Sam as a couple to really feel like I clicked with them. It was a little hard to get on board with the quick development of their relationship and the intensity of their feelings. There were a few scenes that I “felt” but overall, I couldn’t really click with them like I wanted. Overall, I rated this one 3 stars; it will be one that I will never forget and will probably be talking about for a long time coming. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review to be posted on SMIBookClub.com

4 Stars|Amazon|GoodreadsThis was a really great read.  Melinda sent me a review request for his novel a while ago and I regret how long it took me to read it. Truly this book is Great. I am a big fan of novels that really take you ro a ride and this one DEFINITELY did. So, this book took me a little while to get into. Don't let that dissuade you, because the novel definitely got me hooked.Sam and Ethan's story is a modern day Cinderella story. I loved some of the iconic things twisted into it. It definitely made for a great read. The author weaves a story around you and you can't help but want to see it to the end.The main character Sam, definitely had her moments. I was not a fan most of the time. Her attitude and mannerisms drove me a little wonky. It was a good thing that I was in love with Ethan. I tend to not like many Heroines though so it wasn't Sam's fault completely. She was a dreamer and that is never a bad thing. I did find the Fnagirling a little intense, but in the end it all worked for me.Ethan was a fantastic character too. I really enjoyed that he wasn't too Alpha. He made the story even more enjoyable and was definitely Swoon Worthy. I would have liked to have more of his past tied it, but We got just enough from him. Hot brooding movie star? Yes, Please. If you are looking for a light and enjoyable read this is right up you ally. I can't wait to see what book 2 in the series takes me. Both can be read as a standalone. Synopsis: Over the past eight years, twenty-six year old Sam Harper has come to realize a few things: her son is the light of her life, a pint of Cherry Garcia will cure all that ails you, her mother is a biscuit-and-grave-filled genius and nothing, absolutely nothing, ever goes as planned.Still stuck in her tiny hometown of Delia, Georgia, Sam has sat idly by and watched as her life went from “prom-queen and head cheerleader” to “single mom with meaningless desk job”. Sam begins questioning whether Ethan has what it takes to help lead her back to the confident and vivacious woman she used to be, or if Sam will have to do the unthinkable and actually figure life out on her own.Note: The Fangirl Series is a stand-alone series. You do not have to read "You Never Know" prior to reading the other books in the series, but there is character crossover.

The one thing I have enjoyed the most about blogging is getting to meet and know new authors. Working in a bookstore for so many years, you become familiar with the names on the shelves. Blogging has opened up my eyes to this whole world of independent, self-published masterpieces. Melinda Harris' novel, You Never Know is oozing with passion for writing that you don't see in every book you read. It was a plot that I haven't encountered before, and that had me hooked."Over the past eight years, twenty-six year old Sam Harper has come to realize a few things: her son is the light of her life, a pint of Cherry Garcia will cure all that ails you, her mother is a biscuit-and-gravy-filled genius and nothing, absolutely nothing, ever goes as planned. "Sam Harper lives a normal life working at the County Courthouse while raising her son with the help of her loving mother. Sam and her quirky bunch of friends has an odd pastime. They spend their free time watching the filming of a TV show that is going on in their small Georgia town. Sydney, Liz and Rose are the kind of friends every girl wishes for. The four of them remind me of a small town Southern version of Sex in the City. " Sydney?" Liz calls to her as we start putting out the plates and silverware. "I assume you feel you are the most helpful by sitting on the couch and looking pretty?" Sam is a FANGIRL to say the least. She has a self-proclaimed obsession with the quiet, keep to himself star of the show, Ethan Grant. The media portrays him as a jerk BUT Sam knows better. The story of these friends, their relationships and all that goes on in the small town of Delia keeps you engrossed til the very end. Ethan steals your heart with the first text! And as he comes out of his shell, you fall more and more in love with him. And then...BAM! Melinda Harris drops a twist of ALL twists. I will admit, I was waiting for the other shoe to drop with this story. You are reading and you hit some small relational (is that a word?!?) roadblocks, but nothing that constitutes a twist. Nothing prepares you for the twist that yanks at EVERY emotion you have invested in this story! Well played Melinda! Well played.I had trouble placing this book into a category. It read with the innocence of a YA novel, but these characters were in their twenties. The lack of steamy scenes made me hesitant to label it a NA novel. I ended up going with the generic label of 'Fiction.' I would be curious to know what others labeled this book as. Regardless, it didn't stop me from enjoying myself in this sweet story of the impossible dream crush. Now for a few of my favorite quotes:"I promise I'm not some Cassanova that lures girls into his trailer with lasagna.""Ethan is comfort food for my soul.""Monopoly later?" Ethan asks, as we look around the room. "I'm not sure we should do that," I say. "And why is that?""Because I will dominate you."Ethan's smile is sinful. "I kind of like the sound of that."Last, but not least - the NEXT book in the Fangirl series comes out this month! I will be reading this next. I recommend this book to anyone who likes a sweet story of friendship, love and family.

*A copy given by author, in return for an honest review.*☆☆☆☆☆ 5 Stars ☆☆☆☆☆You Never Know is a fun read that took up most of my morning, I was addicted to the book right from the beginning. And as soon as Hollywood bad-boy became part of the picture, I couldn’t put the book down. The story started with single mom Sam obsessing over her Hollywood crush Ethan Grant, the object of everyone’s affection. Sam made it part of her routine to make it to the shooting almost everyday, just to catch a glimpse of Ethan and hopefully to be lucky enough to at least meet him. But as days and weeks past, there was no such sign that meeting Ethan will ever happen. Once she accepted the fact that she had very little chance of making her dream come true, she meets Ethan at a very unlikely moment. Saving him from a crazy fan during a Hollywood party, they were lucky enough to be invited to. From that day one they became engraved in each other’s thoughts, texting became normal and seeing each other became a regular surprise. Sam always knew that Ethan wasn’t the bad boy that everyone in Hollywood painted him out to be, after spending time with him it confirmed how much of a perfect gentleman he truly was. Sam’s life became a real life Cinderella story. Ethan was the sweetest guy she has ever been with and he became a big part of her life. And knowing that how much Ethan cared for her son too, made her the happiest a girl. When real life started getting their way of happiness, Sam started questioning herself if everything that goes with Ethan is even worth the hassle of being with him. Yes she loves him with all that she is and he feels the same, at least she hopes so. But is love enough? Will their love be enough to withstand the crazy that is Hollywood? Or will Sam give up Ethan for his own good (as she thinks)?. Read and find out.The story of Sam an Ethan is an addicting read, but a very innocent and tamed story. This book is sweet without getting naughty, which I enjoyed a lot. I love sweet stories and this is one of them. I am completely in love with the idea of Ethan, the way he was in this story is what dreams are made of. This book is a Cinderella story, full of love and sweetness. <3:::REVIEW IS ALSO ON FOUR CHICKS FLIPPING PAGES:::http://fourchicksflippingpages.weebly...

As I stated before, I fell in love with this author awhile back. Melinda Harris wrote a sweet, compelling story. While it’s not your typical, it came to live in a way all of its own. Kind of like a real life Cinderella story. I know I normally stick to books that make me think it can happen in real life, but this one really worked for me!Sam has been infatuated with Ethan since as long as she can remember. As a teenager, she had posters of him hanging on her wall. I mean, who wouldn’t be intrigued with this movie star? Imagine her surprise when he starts filming a new TV Series right there in her hometown. She, along with half of the town, camp outside of the filming on a regular basis in hopes of meeting Ethan and the rest of the cast. Sam doesn’t attend as often as the others because she has a son at home that needs her. After camping out turns up no run-ins with Ethan, she almost decides to give up. Imagine her shock when she finally gets her chance to meet him at a fundraiser.Weeks after that fundraiser, she has yet to hear from him again. Then, one day outside the set – he ask her to dinner. This is where it turns into kind of a Cinderella story. I am not going to go into detail because I think it’s something that needs to be read to understand. This story is one of pure, hopeless love. It catalogs the trials and tribulations that come along with dating someone famous. I love that it shares all ups and downs, the good, the bad and everything in between. The characters were well written and the plot of the story was easy to follow.I will say that I wish there was more interaction with Sam’s son. I felt like he was with his grandmother just a little too much. Or maybe that’s just me – I tend to be paranoid with my kids so they don’t go away from me that often, so for all I know – this could be normal! lol. I HAVE to comment on the plot twist. HOLY CRAP. I didn’t see that coming. Seriously – out of left field. Do I think it took away from the story? No. It was just unexpected. Yet, that is what I love most about books! I adore the ones that can surprise me.

4.5 STARSSo, first I want to share that the author personally gave me a copy of this book as a gift. She had zero expectations of my reviewing it. She even told me twice not to worry about a review. The book was simply meant as a gift. Next, I want to point out that that didn’t persuade my opinion of the book. I just had to write this review because the book is WORTH SHARING!I don’t want to share too much, though, because I want you to be just as surprised as I was! When I first started the book, I really wondered if I would like Sam at all. She’s OBSESSED with a movie star, and in real life I’d probably think she was a fruit cake. The amazing thing, though, is that I still felt myself pulling for her in big ways. Now, she still definitely frustrated me at times, but I still connected with her. And Ethan Grant, wasn’t the kind of guy I’d find myself falling for, but through Sam’s character, I did!The story is fast paced, and I never felt like it started to drag. The plot’s amazing – you MUST read the whole book, or you will SERIOUSLY be missing out! The characters are all well-developed. I really enjoyed Sam’s three friends. Even with the minor characters, the personalities were unique and came to life. So, if you’re a romance nut, then I recommend this for the plot if nothing else! I’d consider this a clean romance. There’s a consummated relationship, but no detailed scenes. I can’t wait to see what Mel has in store for us next!!

I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!! I'm a long time reader and am rarely completely absorbed and surprised by a book but I was by this one. Sometimes words in a book flow very easily and without effort and this author has an undeniable talent for that. This is a story all of us book nerds can relate to - it's about fangirling. Yes, we've all been there! I have been so flustered in the presence of an author I admired that I was tripping over my words and completely incoherent. The main character, Sam, is a total fangirl over an actor named Ethan. She even stalks out his TV show set that is filming in her hometown hoping for a glimpse of him. He has become her obsession. There isn't much to say without spoiling the story - but I will just say that I read this book in basically one sitting, only stopping when my kindle literally fell off the side of the bed when I fell asleep and I picked it up as soon as I woke up and read until I was finished. I'm diving right into the second book and losing myself in it on this rainy day and I just KNOW I will not be disappointed. Thank you Melinda for this amazing story and your wonderful words. You are a true talent and I can't wait to see what comes next!

Have you ever obsessed over an actor? Hung out for hours just to get a glimpse and maybe the chance for a picture? This is how Samantha and her friends spend their extra time. You see, a television show started filming in their small town a little over a year ago, and Ethan Grant, her favorite actor, is starring on the show.Just when Samantha has just about given up on seeing or even talking to the handsome young actor, she meets him at a charity dinner and then again at the set. He is a true gentleman and she just enjoys getting to know him and ends up falling head over heels in love with this man.But can this relationship work? They are from two very different worlds, and she is a single mother trying to juggle all that comes with that. Does she want to bring the crazy Hollywood circus of paparazzi and cameras into her and her son’s life? They would lose so much but what they would gain is monumental.OMG, this book is so good. There is a HUGE twist about 2/3 in that I didn’t see coming. Wow, great writing. When Samantha cried, I cried and when she laughed, I was laughing as well. There is a fangirl in each of us I think. 5 stars!

Part of what I love about this book is the pure fantasy of the idea behind the plot - "You Never Know." I enjoyed the story, the characters, and the feeling like I would definitely want to be Sam at most points in the book. If you've read the other reviews, you already know there is a WTF plot twist in the book. I read this book blind and didn't read any reviews, and I am glad I did. I doubt I would've seen this plot twist coming, but it was amazingly crazy to be totally and completely surprised in a world where most plots do not surprise me anymore at all. That being said, I am really glad this is a series so I can spend a bit more time with the fangirls. After all, I am a fangirl at heart!

I found this nugget of a book at a book signing and I'm so glad that I did. This author took my favorite fantasy of a regular girl falling in love with a movie star and put it in book form. There are some nice twists and turns, which made You Never Know a fun and humorous read. While Sam is waiting on the edges of the movies set, the most that she can hope for each day is that Eric has looked in her direction. Through a chance meeting, they are thrown together and work to make a lasting relationship. With much advise and help from Sam's friends, she gets her happy ending in an unexpected way. Be on the watch for those friends who are ready to go on adventures of their own.

I really loved this book! It had a great story line with a twist I wasn't expecting. Only one bother and it's just bc I live here and am not a fan but ..... in the book it says FSU (Tallahassee) is in Jacksonville, Florida and that's a no no. We'd much rather claim UF Gators in Gainesville.

I read this one b/c the author is a friend of a friend, I like the genre, and I like the plot genre. I did not, unfortunately, like the book. I couldn't identify with the protagonist at all...she just seemed weird and creepy to me. Sometimes I would think I would understand her complete stalkerness, and then she would ruin it by saying stuff like (paraphrased), "it wasn't just a celebrity crush. I'd been in love with him before I met him." I had to skim the whole middle because it was just the blissfully happy romance nonstop and it was actually pretty boring. Then the end happened and I was just like WTF? The ending and epilogue dropped it from a 2 star "it was okay" rating to a one star "didn't like it"

Sigh... can I live in You Never Know?I love this book! You Never Know is one of my favorites to re-read again and again. I want to plunk myself down in this Fangirl World and never leave. Ms Harris does mess with your head a bit, but in the best way. The friendship between the friends are the friendships I want to have. Women you can count on that always support you. A super romantic male lead that you want to hold on to! One of my all time favorites! Read You Never Know and then re-read several more times.
