Annie and Me Reviews
It is a difficult, wonderful and sacred journey to which Rich invites us...Rich is known for his volumes of poetry which speak the wisdom of the ages and his own insights, like a breath from heaven, usually through his muse Maya his Shih Tzu companion. This volume however, harkens back to another companion, Annie, who made an indelible mark on Rich’s life and, I think, helped craft his craft or at least the enlightened spirit behind it. Rich had befriended her when she simply showed up one day. It was the beginning of a deep and meaningful bonding. After years together, when Rich found that his beloved Annie had cancer and only weeks to live, he decided to meet the specter of her passing head on and take the journey with her. Here is a collection of poems, a memoir in verse, that tells the touching story. Unlike Rich’s other volumes where we know we can pick them up with expectations of hope, inspiration and a veritable torrent of positive energy, these pages beckon us to a sad path, we know where this will go. And yet it is a journey we MUST take. I am tempted to say if you have ever lost someone you love this book is for you but that is not true. If you have ever loved, if you have ever mingled your soul to another, if ever you have traveled lifes path, however momentary, with a good companion… this book is for you.All of these poems, these episodes captured and preserved for us hold the light of Rich’s heart and the magic of his time with Annie. The brush strokes of his words conjured memories and feeling for those I have lost. In his parting with her I was able to revisit and celebrate the lives that have touched and transformed me. I would often pause and visit my own episodes and loves departed. Some poems and illustrations touched me more. I’m sure we’ll all find the ones that speak to us the deepest. For me it was the times Rich found a way to communicate his love through a gesture and the way Annie would respond. My throat tightened as I read She Responds In Such a Beautiful Way. Rich had decided, in the midst of winter, to bring a bit of Spring into Annie. She pulled the green in close. In the presence of the shadow of death, Rich speaks beautifully of memories of spring filling her memory and animating her being. If that one gripped me in the throat, it was First and Last Days that finally loosed the water works. Again, an amazingly tender gesture on Rich’s part and a response in kind from Annie. Rich came upon a photograph of Annie sleeping on one of his sweaters. He went and found the old sweater. He wore it to fill it with his scent. Then he offered it to Annie. For a moment the gift invigorated her “She grabbed it and drew it near.” So it goes this shared language of love and understanding between them couched in a long goodbye. I won’t mince words Annie's final departure is gripping. But Rich found the beauty in it. He shares with us the love that was so palpably present and, now, ever enduring. I am better for sharing his final journey with he and Annie… I knew I would be.
An amazing book!Firstly I must say that this is an absolutely beautiful book, although it covers a very sad subject, the passing of the authors much loved cat Annie with Cancer, the sadness is somehow transformed, beautifully and sensitively into a celebration of the life of a very special cat, and the bond they shared. After Annie was diagnosed, the time they spent together created an extraordinary healing time somehow, and Rich recounts this through his poetry.Running through the book is a strong vein of happy memories, and magical moments which have been captured forever. The day he first set eyes on her, her favourite things, her little foibles, and mannerisms, all the special things which they shared and these will live eternally in this heart, as well as this wonderful book.I, like many others have lost beloved pets and these poems touched my heart deeply, the tears were flowing freely as I read it. Beautifully written, the tears were for the memories his words brought back, of animals I had watched go over the rainbow bridge, and miss so much.It is evident that the author’s heart and soul is poured into this collection of poems, however, Rich Okun’s talent do not stop at his writing, as he also illustrated the book. Through his words and art work, he has captured the very essence and soul of Annie throughout her life, from a tiny kitten through to the end… A beautiful book which I will treasure forever.
During the writing of this book, my only intent was to be single minded and focused on caring for my dying cat, and observing what was happening - All my life I had been angry and afraid - I didn't know it but this had stemmed from my issues with death and dying and my issues surrounded my mother dying when I was young. While writing this book, my fears and angers dropped as Annie helped me to form a new relationship with death and dying and life. I hope that this book can help you too as many of us have difficulties with this subject. Whether it is a beloved pet, or human, the experience is the same. In words and pictures, let this story find the hole in your heart, and fill it.
