This has been the sixth or seventh "Childhood of Famous Americans' series books. They are all very good. They are good to introduce your child to these famous people. Giving information about their youth, teen and adulthood all the way to their death. And then why they were considered 'important'. Although some of these books leave out some important things about a person (like in this book they didn't say anything at all about his drug abuse or his having affairs with so many women. According to Wikipedia he was married twice and had 12 children with 10 different women. But for a child's book this information wasn't important and am glad the author left it out.) But the author DID include Ray Charles influence when segregation was so prevalent. He refused to play and walked away from a packed house at a very popular place. He was sued and fined after but then years later he was invited back after segregation went through. He wanted equal rights to all people, especially to the black people because they were the ones that encouraged him and helped him get where he's at. This was a very good biography

I admit it....I cried for Ray's mother. Not only did we learn about Ray and his childhood, we discovered that it was his mother who overcame great difficulty and tragedy to make sure her little boy grew up to be an independent man. She is the woman who inspired me most in 2008!

I liked it. He goes blind. And he gets a bike and he does it when he was blind and he could ride it faster than everyone else who could see and he never crashed.

First time I have picked up one of these, and I can see what the appeal is. Very fun way to learn about history! I learned a lot about Ray Charles that I didn't know before and it was a quick read.

This guy had such a hard life. I almost didn't like to read about it, but he developed a good attitude about it and just dealt with it. There were lots of great lessons to learn in this book.

Borrowed. It must of been very hard to be poor and blind.
